Poets in all parts of the world have always made efforts to explore and express the emotion of love in the form of poems. When I lost my mother there was no way on earth that I could have written a shopping list never mind poems for funeral tributes.
Escape reality for just one second, and count the changes. An anniversary poem given to a wife is a very nice thing. Make sure you are happy with it before the reading, the last thing you want to do is decide that it's not that appropriate on the day.
Many sites not only have classic love poems archived, but also make efforts to have a collection of contemporary love poems by inviting amateur poets to contribute. Similarly, a love poem can be easily identified by the language itself. For a completely different approach, try a humorous poem.
Using poetry to help with grief, to express love or pain and to memorialize a friend or family member is very powerful and will be appreciated by others who have experienced a loss. Forget all that stuff you learned in school and just write.
